Total Joint Replacement

A total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint, such as a hip or knee, are removed and replaced with a plastic or metal device called a prosthesis. The goal of this procedure is to relieve pain in the joint caused by damage to the cartilage and regain normal and healthy function. The hip and knee replacement specialists at the Midwest Bone & Joint Institute perform countless joint replacements each year on patients of all ages, relieving their pain and helping them return to active lifestyles.

The first total knee replacement was performed in 1968. Since that time, surgical advances have greatly increased the effectiveness of the procedure. More than 600,000 knee replacements are performed each year in the US.
